The purpose is to serve 400,000 people of Chittagong and around with one-stop and all types of treatment facilities.
We have started the construction with our own resources which is far short of the assessed fund. We need at least 100 crore taka (US$ 12.5 milion). This is an adventure and a challenge for us. We appeal for assistance from local and foreign donors.
1979 was United Nations year for the children. The writer was the President of Rotary Club of Chittagong Bangladesh D-3280. Rotary Club of Chittagong took the initiative to start a hospital for children as there was none in Chittagong and around at that time. The Club invited other social activists of Chittagong who joined and took active part in the establishment of the hospital. The constitution was framed and passed. As per the constitution election for an Executive Committee was held from amongst the members of the hospital.
The Committee develops and manages the hospital through qualified management team. The term of the Executive Committee is 3 years at the end of which a fresh election takes place democratically and the new committee is elected for the next 3 years. The first President was a distinguished elderly Physician of the city by the name Dr. A F M Yusuf, FRCP. The 2nd President was Mr. L. K. Siddiqi, a past District Governor of Rotary District 3280. From 1996 the writer, a past President of Rotary Club of Chittagong D-3280 has been the President having elected repeatedly.
Although Rotary initiation was there but the membership was open to all social service oriented organisations. So the committee has members from not only Rotary but also from physicians, Lions, Inner Wheels and other social activists. It is a joint project and that is why it has grown so fast and so well.
The organisation is recognised by Government of People's Republic of Bangladesh through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Social Affairs. The academic section of the hospital is recognised by Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BM&DC), Chittagong University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Bangladesh Nursing Council (BNC) and Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS). This in fact is a land mark for ideal public and private participation for the non-profit making health service organisation.
